Approximating the Traffic Grooming Problem in Tree and Star Networks

چکیده
We consider the problem of grooming paths in all-optical networks with tree topology so as to minimize the switching cost, measured by the total number of used ADMs. We first present efficient approximation algorithms with approximation factor of 2 ln(δ · g) + o(ln(δ · g)) for any fixed node degree bound δ and grooming factor g, and 2 ln g + o(ln g) in unbounded degree directed trees, respectively. In the attempt of extending our results to general undirected trees we completely characterize the complexity of the problem in star networks by providing polynomial time optimal algorithms for g ≤ 2 and proving the intractability of the problem for any fixed g > 2. While for general topologies the problem was known to be NP-hard g not constant, the complexity for fixed values of g was still an open question.

A Genetic Algorithm Approach to the Grooming of Dynamic Traffic in Tree and Star Networks with Bifurcation
Traffic grooming is widely employed to reduce the number of ADM’s and wavelengths. We consider the problem of grooming of dynamic traffic in WDM tree and star networks in this paper. To achieve better results, we used the bifurcation techniques to the grooming of arbitrary dynamic traffic in a strictly non-blocking manner in networks. Three splitting methods, including Traffic-Cutting, Traffic-...

We consider the problem of grooming traffic in WDM star and tree networks to minimize equipment cost. We prove an important result regarding wavelength assignment in both topologies. We present a series of lower and upper bounds on the optimal solutions for both star and tree networks. The bounds allow us to evaluate a set of heuristics we also develop.
متن کاملOn Optimal Traffic Grooming in Elemental Network Topologies
We consider the problem of traffic grooming in WDM path, star, and tree networks. Traffic grooming is a variant of the well-known logical topology design problem, and is concerned with the development of techniques for combining low speed traffic components onto high speed channels in order to minimize network cost. Our contribution is two-fold. In the first part of the paper we settle the comp...
